A juvenile court in Dhaka has rejected the bail petition of Dhaka College student Hasnatul Islam Faiyaz in a case filed for killing of a police constable during the quota reform movement in Jatrabari area on 19 July.
Judge Roksana Begum Happy of the Juvenile Court-3 of Dhaka denied the petition, which was submitted by Faiyaz’s lawyer, claiming that the accused was innocent and not involved in the incident.
Defence lawyer argued that Faiyaz has been implicated in the case as part of a plan to harass him. Furthermore Faiyaz is only a 17 years old student and thus he should be granted bail.
However, the prosecution opposed the bail request, saying that Faiyaz is named in the FIR as an accused and that the investigation officer found evidence of his involvement in the incident.
On completion of the hearing, the judge turned down the defence plea considering the importance of offence brought against Faiyaz and other accused in the case.
Earlier, on 28 July, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shanta Akhter placed Faiyaz on a seven-day remand, treating him as an adult.
In response to a petition, the state, on 29 July, informed the High Court that taking Faiyaz on remand and tying him with ropes was a mistake and assured that steps would be taken to prevent such mistakes from happening again.
