Former Chhatra Dal president, six others put on 2-day remand

Staff Reporter:

A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed seven people, including former president of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Kazi Rawnakul Islam Srabon, on a two-day remand each in a case filed over the alleged seizure of arms, crude bombs, and sticks from the BNP’s Naya Paltan central office.

The other accused who were remanded are – former joint convener of Dhaka metropolitan south unit Swechchhasebak Dal Md Nazrul Islam, general secretary of Government Titumir College unit Chhatra Dal Md Imam Hossain, BNP activists Md Shahadat Hossain, Md Tanu, Md Monir Hossain, and Barkat Hawlader.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shanto Islam Mallik passed the order after the police produced the accused before the court.

Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Inspector Md Kabir Hossain Howlader, also the investigating officer, sought a five-day remand for the accused each, while defence lawyers submitted bail pleas for their clients.

The court allowed the DB police to take the seven under their custody for interrogation for two days, rejecting the bail petitions.

Members of the DB police arrested the seven people and found arms and explosives conducting an overnight drive at the BNP’s central office in the early hours of Wednesday.

The police filed the case against 26 people, including Srabon, and 200-300 more unnamed people over the seizure.
