Police entered the campus of Rajshahi University on Wednesday evening and fired tear shells to disperse quota reform protesters gathering at different points of the university.
It was not immediately clear whether police personnel tried to free Vice Chancellor Golam Sabbir Sattar and other officials, who were confined by the protesting students to the administrative building around 3pm.
Students were demanding the withdrawal of the university’s order to vacate halls, and besieged the administrative building after learning their demand was not met.
However, the vice chancellor assured students that the politics of Chhatra League and other student fronts would be discontinued within the campus until further notice.
Earlier, clashes broke out at the University of Dhaka and Jahangirnagar University as police attempted to disperse quota reform protesters agitating against the order to vacate their respective residential halls.
