Flood victims receive cash support from WFP in Gaibandha

Gaibandha: As many as 20000 flood affected families of four upazilas of the district have received cash support from the United Nations’ World Food Program (WFP) to pass their days without economic trou-ble during the emergency.
Overall flood situation in hard-to-reach chars located at eastern side of the Brahmaputra river and river-basins at western side of the river deteriorated as the river was flowing 89 cm over the danger level at Fulchhari ghat point of the district
Due to the flood a total of 67, 729 families of Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari and Saghata upazilas of the district were marooned creating untold sufferings.
Many of them took shelter on the flood control embankment with their belongings including domestic animals and poultry birds passing their days miserably for want of edible food and pure drinking water.
Taking this in view, WFP stood beside the flood victims with cash support to mitigate their sufferings.
Accordingly, the cash support of TK 10 crore was distributed to 20,000 flood-affected families of the upazilas.
To get cash support without any hassle WFP used modern technology.
The money was sent to the selected beneficiaries each through their bkash account. Each of the benefi-ciaries got TK 5,000 from WFP, the world’s largest humanitarian organization saving lives in emergen-cies a few days back.
