Body of one victim in Sunamganj boat capsize recovered

Staff Reporter:

The body of one of the three people, who went missing when their boat capsized in strong currents in the Surma river, washed ashore two days later on Thursday at a char in Sunamganj district.

The deceased has been identified as Josna, 30, while whereabouts of her 1.5-year old daughter and the third victim of the boat capsize Goljan Begum,70, remain unknown as river currents in flood affected northeastern districts stay consistently strong.

On Thursday night, river water was flowing above the danger level at six points in Surma and Kushiyara rivers, with Kushiyara river posing particularly high levels of threats in four upazilas of Sylhet district. Strong Kushiyara currents have broken through river protection dykes at numerous points in Biyanibazar, Jakiganj, Fenchuganj and Balaganj upazilas.

Josna is only latest fatality in the devastating northeastern floods currently raging for the third time this season.

Monir Uddin, a council member of ward no 6 at Surma Union, confirmed the recovery of Josna’s body. Dowrabazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Badrul Hasan also confirmed news of the recovery.

On Tuesday morning, seven people got on a boat from a flood shelter in Dowrabazar Upazila, Sunamganj, to reach the Sadar area. But, at the middle point of the Surma river, the boat could not stay afloat in the face of strong currents and capsized.
