Progress in city, decline in rural areas

Staff Reporter:

While water levels in Sylhet city are receding, rural areas continue to see rising floodwaters, with around 6,50,000 people remaining affected by the flood, according to the district administration, Bangladesh Meteorological Department and Water Development Board in Sylhet.

Starting Wednesday morning, water levels along the Kushiara River began rising. The Surma and the Kushiara are still flowing above the danger levels at various points. Despite some relief from continuous rains, the situation remains critical.

Sylhet has experienced its third flood since last Monday, heavily impacting areas including Jaintapur, Zakiganj, Kanaighat, Beanibazar, Golapganj, Fenchuganj, Gowainghat, and Sylhet Sadar upazila. Houses, roads, and educational institutions are submerged. However, water levels in the city began to recede on Wednesday morning as the rain subsided.

Assistant Meteorologist Shah Sajib Hossain from the Sylhet Meteorological Office said that Sylhet received 0.4 mm of rain in the last 24 hours, with Cherrapunji receiving 40 mm. There was no rain till 3pm, but light to heavy rains are expected in the coming days.

Deepak Ranjan Das, executive engineer of the Water Development Board in Sylhet, said on Wednesday that the Kushiara River is flowing 140 cm above the danger level at Sheola point and 99 cm above at Fenchuganj point. This has caused renewed flooding in areas along the Kushiara River, with water breaching river dykes and entering localities.
