Around 700 tourists confined in Sajek as roads submerged

Staff Reporter:

Around 700 tourists remain stranded in Sajek as a flash flood submerged roads in Khagrachhari and Rangamati, said tour operators.
The roads between Khagrachhari and Rangamati’s Sajek and Langadu have been submerged amid the recent rain and flash floods.
As a result, travelling from the popular tourist spot became risky moving to Dhaka or Chattogram.
Flash floods submerge the road that would lead them back home due to continuous rainfall.
Shirin Akter, Baghaichhari upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) said the roads between Khagrachhari and Sajek in Rangamati and Langadu have been submerged amid rain and flash floods. Several roads, includ-ing those in Khagrachhari’s Dighinala and Baghaichhari’s Baghaihat Bazar, have also been submerged.
She also mentioned that the tourists would be able to return once the water recedes from the roads.
Rahul Chakma John, secretary general of the Sajek Resort Cottage Owners Association, said that the road in Baghaihat has been submerged, and transportation halted due to rainfall.
“Yesterday, around 70 vehicles came to Sajek. Around 700 tourists are currently stranded in the valley,” he added.
