Liveability Index: Dhaka 6th least liveable city in world

Staff Reporter:

Dhaka ranked 6th in the latest list of least livable cities in the world of the Global Liveability Index 2024 published by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) on Thursday.

Dhaka slipped two notches from its 2023 ranking in the Global Liveability Index 2024 report.

The Bangladesh capital ranked 168th in the list, one place above Pakistan’s Karachi.

According to the index, Austria’s capital Vienna is the best livable city in the world for the third consecutive year with a score of 98.4, while Syria’s capital Damascus is the least livable city with a score of 30.7.

Vienna, Copenhagen, Zurich, Melbourne, and Calgary were placed at the top while the five least liveable cities on the list were Damascus, Tripoli, Algiers, Lagos, and Karachi.

EIU’s index ranks 173 cities considering stability, healthcare, education, culture and the environment, and infrastructure.

This year’s average score has risen slightly, despite geopolitical conflicts, civil unrest and the housing crisis.

North America and Western Europe are the most liveable regions in the world-but both their scores have declined, as per the report.

Hong Kong is the biggest climber this year, rising by 10 places.
