Police recover Tk46 lakh stolen from businessman, one arrested

The police have recovered Tk46.20 lakh stolen from a businessman within a few days he lost the amount.

They also arrested a man named Rubel, 36, a driver by profession, in connection with the theft.

According to the police, businessman Shawkat Hossain Sumon, 41, came to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Old Dhaka on 12 June to attend a hearing.

At the time, he was also carrying Tk52 lakh in cash intended for his hospital employees’ salaries.

Sumon went to have breakfast at a restaurant in the area, leaving the money in his car. Seizing the opportunity, Rubel fled with the amount.

Being unable to locate the driver after searches, the businessman lodged a complaint with Sutrapur police station on 14 June.

The police launched drives in different areas and apprehended Rubel in Cox’s Bazar. Based on his information, they also conducted raids in Cox’s Bazar and Gazipur and recovered Tk46.20 lakh in cash.

Expressing his gratitude, Sumon said, “I am extremely happy with the assistance of the police. I never thought that I would get my money back so quickly.”

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Assistant Commissioner (Kotwali zone) Nazrul Islam said the police conducted drives as soon as they received the complaint from the plaintiff. “We were able to arrest the accused and recover Tk46.20 lakh in cash.”

DMP Deputy Commissioner Md Mahbub-uz-Zaman said, “The accused has been produced before the court and efforts are on to recover the remaining amount.”
