Staff Reporter:
Former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has resigned as the president of Dhaka Boat Club where he had been serving the post for nine consecutive years.
The resignation comes amid the allegations of amassing vast assets through widespread corruption committed by the ex-IGP and his family members.
In a letter sent to the club’s Executive Committee on 13 June, Benazir requested to make Rubel Aziz the club’s president.
Confirming the matter to the media, Dhaka Boat Club Executive Committee member Nasir U Mahmood said Rubel Aziz, who was the first president of the club, was serving as an advisor since he handed over the responsibilities of the president to Benazir Ahmed.
Following the former IGP’s letter, Rubel has been acting as the club’s president again, Nasir said.
Benazir mentioned in the letter that he was currently staying abroad due to urgent matters, and that was why he could not carry out his duties properly.
Rubel served as the president for a year after Dhaka Boat Club was established in 2014. Since Benazir took over the charge in 2015, the position never witnessed any change.
