Siam Hossain, one of the key suspects in the murder of MP Md Anwarul Azim Anar in Kolkata who was arrested in Nepal and handed over to Indian police, is being interrogated by the Kolkata Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman has said.
“Investigation is carried out where the incident takes place. But Bangladeshi law states that if a Bangladeshi has committed a crime abroad, we can bring that criminal to our country and make them stand trial,” the DMP chief told reporters on Friday.
Both India and Bangladesh police are investigating the murder, he said, adding that the two countries will decide on and choose the next course of action at one point.
Anwarul Azim Anar, a lawmaker from the ruling Awami League, crossed the Darshana-Gede border into India for treatment on May 12. He stayed at his friend Gopal Biswas’s home in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal.
The following day, he left to see a doctor at around noon and was expected to return in the evening. However, a WhatsApp message from his phone to Biswas said that he had gone to Delhi instead and would call if necessary.
Since then, he could not be reached by phone. Eventually, the Bangladesh government confirmed his death on May 22, citing Indian police.
