Sylhet: While floodwaters have receded somewhat in several Sylhet upazilas, they are rising in the city. Floodwaters from the overflowing Surma River have entered various parts of the city, causing hardship for residents.
The Sylhet District Administration reported that 228 people have returned home from shelters in the past 12 hours as the flood situation has improved in the upazilas. However, heavy rains since Sunday night have caused the water level of the Surma River to rise, currently flowing 13 centimeters above the dan-ger level.
This has exacerbated the flood situation in various parts of Sylhet city. Sources warn that the situation could worsen if the heavy rains and hill slides continue.
Sylhet Meteorological Department meteorologist Shah Md Sajeeb Ahmed stated that 226.6 millimeters of rain fell in Sylhet from Sunday 6 am to Monday 6 am. An additional 28 millimeters of rainfall was recorded from 6 am to 9 am.
On-the-spot reports indicate that the rising water of the Surma River is entering the city through canals, causing significant waterlogging. Roads have been submerged and water has entered houses in various areas of the city, including Upashahar, Mendubagh, Machimpur, Chhatarpar, Kushighat, Chalibandar, Kamalgarh, Jatarpur, Subhani Ghat, Dakshin Surma, Kazirbazar, Terratan, and Borai Kandi.
Waterlogging has also occurred in front of educational institutions and mosques. Due to the sudden wa-terlogging, Monday’s exams have been postponed in various educational institutions in the city.
City residents reported that water has inundated many parts of the city after just one night of rain. They are suffering due to the rise in the river water and the heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, Sylhet City Corporation Public Relations Officer Sazzalu Laskar said that more than 100 families are staying in two shelters in the Sylhet metropolis. He assured that food is being provided for them and that the flood situation is being closely monitored.
