ACC probe sought against ex-Army chief Aziz

Staff Reporter:

A lawyer on Wednesday filed a petition with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) seeking an investigation into the alleged corruption of former army chief General (retd) Aziz Ahmed.
The petitioner, Advocate Salahuddin Regan, said if the ACC does not take action, he will file a writ petition with the High Court in public interest.

“The US sanctions against Aziz Ahmed on charges of corruption and the reports published in national dailies have damaged the image of the Bangladesh Army and Bangladesh in the national and international arena. This has tarnished the reputation of the Bangladesh Army globally and in UN peacekeeping missions.

“It has undermined the confidence and trust of the common people of the country in the army. But, it is very unfortunate that the ACC did not take the initiative to investigate even after such a big allegation came to light.”

On 21 May this year, the US imposed sanctions against General Aziz and his immediate family members for his alleged involvement in massive corruption. The US stated that Aziz’s actions undermined the values of democratic institutions in Bangladesh and the public’s faith in public institutions.
