Rain paralyses life in Dhaka city

Staff Reporter:

The heavy rains, due to the impact of cyclone Remal, have been lashing the capital Dhaka since the morning, inundating many streets with knee-deep water and leaving normal life in the city.
Meanwhile, a total of 115 mm of rainfall was recorded from Monday morning until 3 pm, and similar weather is expected to continue until Tuesday, Md Omar Farroque, a meteorologist of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) told the Daily Sun.
City dwellers, including office workers and school-goers, have plunged into an acute crisis as most of the streets are submerged in knee-deep water. Additionally, a shortage of public transportation has exacerbated their suffering.
Many office-goers were seen standing on the roadside due to a shortage of public transportation, while drivers of many CNG-run auto-rickshaws were refusing passengers because of waterlogging on the streets.
Many people were seen got drenched in rain and gusty winds while they were waiting for the public transport. Besides, many areas of Dhaka north and south city corporations went knee-deep in water.
Many areas of Dhaka, including Manik Mia Avenue, Dhanmondi Road No. 27, Green Road, New Market, Kawran Bazar, Mirpur, Kazipara, and Shewrapara, were submerged due to the heavy rain.
While talking to the reporter, Ashiqul Islam said he left his residence on Indira Road to go to his workplace in the Bashundhara area. However, he contacted at least five auto-rickshaws, all of which refused to take him to his destination. At last, a driver agreed to go but demanded fare three times higher than the actual fare.
The BMD predicted light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at most places over Khulna, Barisal, Dhaka, Chattogram Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions under the peripherals of the cyclonic storm ‘Remal’.
The Severe Cyclonic Storm “Remal” over Northwest Bay and adjoining area moved northwards, completed crossing the coast and now lies over Jashore and adjoining area into a land deep Depression.
It is likely to move north-eastwards further and weaken into a land depression by giving precipitation gradually, it added.
Earlier around 1pm, the met office released a warning post where the maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Payra and Mongla were advised to lower danger signal number 10, but instead hoist local cautionary signal number three.
