The police headquarters has instructed field-level police officers to enforce the ‘no helmet, no fuel’ policy aimed at preventing the ongoing spate of road accidents in the country.
Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP), crime and operation, Atiqul Islam gave the directive during a monthly crime review meeting held at the Police headquarters in Dhaka on Thursday.
Senior police officers participated in the meeting virtually from different parts of the country.
Atiqul, during the meeting, also directed the policemen to investigate the cases related to road accidents fairly and impartially.
He also asked them to continue their drive against unfit vehicles which is one of the major causes of the road accident.
The police headquarters went on the step as Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Wednesday asked the authorities concerned to implement the ‘no helmet, no fuel” policy to stop road accidents.
Quader, also general secretary of the ruling Awami League, said no more than two people, including the driver, can be carried on a motorcycle across the country, with everyone required to wear helmets.
Otherwise, fuel sales will be prohibited, he asked the respective authorities to implement the order.
