Nine more BGP members take shelter in Bangladesh

Nine more members of Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) have fled and taken refuge in Bangladesh amid the ongoing conflict between the ruling junta and the armed rebel group along the international border.

They entered Bangladesh through the Hwaikong frontier of Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar at different times on Sunday, Lt Col Mohiuddin Ahmed, commanding officer of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion-2 in Teknaf, confirmed the matter.

The BGB members disarmed and took them into custody, he added.

With the new arrival, the number of Myanmar troops has risen to 189 so far.

On 11 March, 177 BGP members fled to Bangladesh and took shelter amid clashes along the border in the neighbouring country.

In February, 330 Myanmar nationals, including BGP members, army personnel, and immigration officials, crossed the border and took refuge in Bangladesh.

On 15 February, they were handed over to the BGP amid tight security.
