Govt using maximum effort to rescue hijacked ship, crew members

Staff Reporter:

The government is exerting maximum efforts to rescue both the hijacked Bangladesh-flagged MV Abdullah and its crew members.

Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud made the comment while replying to a question on Friday in Chittagong.

“We are making all-out efforts. Yesterday (Thursday) there was an inter-ministerial meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government is taking all out measures to rescue them in good health,” he said.

He, however, did not disclose the modalities.

“We will not disclose in which way we are trying, because it is not an issue for public disclosure,” he said. “Our efforts will be to rescue all the crew members and the ship in the quickest possible time.”

MV Abdullah, with 23 crew members and carrying coal, was en route to the UAE from Mozambique when it fell into the hands of pirates in the Indian Ocean on Tuesday.

Referring to a similar, the foreign minister said: “A ship from the same company was hijacked in 2010. It took 100 days to rescue the ship. There is no lack of effort. We are trying in different ways. Hopefully, we will be able to recuse the crew members and the ship effectively.”
