Govt to create five more municipalities

Staff Reporter:

The government is going to form five new municipalities in Brahmanbaria, Pabna, Gaibandha, Khulna and Kurigram, and one more upazila in Narail.

The Secretarial Committee on Establishment of New Upazilas and Police Stations has recently approved the proposals to form the new municipalities and the upazila.

Now the proposals will be discussed in a meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reforms (NICAR) for final approval, said officials concerned.

On condition of anonymity, a Cabinet Division official told the Daily Sun that 24 proposals for discussion at the NICAR meeting have been sent to the Prime Minister’s Office. The meeting of NICAR will be held on the date given by the prime minister.

The prime minister, who is the president of NICAR, usually holds a meeting of it before or after a cabinet meeting. Proposals for formation of new divisions, districts, upazilas, city corporations, municipalities, and police stations have to be approved in the NICAR meeting.

The proposed municipalities will be established in Ashuganj upazila in Brahmanbaria, Kashinathpur area of Sathia upazila in Pabna, Sadullapur upazila in Gaibandha, Binodganj area in Paikgacha upazila of Khulna, and Roumari upazila in Kurigram.

The Local Government Division has proposed forming “Purulia upazila” by combining eight unions of Narail Sadar and Kalia upazilas in Narail district.

After the formation of five new municipalities, the number of municipalities in the country will be 333. If one more upazila is added, the number of upazilas will be 496.

Proposals to expand the boundaries of Khulna City Corporation and Joypurhat Municipality, upgrade Madaripur district to special category district and upgrade Meherpur district from “C” category district to “B” category district will also come up in the next NICAR meeting, said officials concerned.

Bangabandhu Tunnel East police station, Bangabandhu Tunnel West police station, Kattoli police station and Mohra police station are being formed in Chattogram Metropolitan Area, said sources. Besides, the authorities proposed to divide the Raujan police station area in Chattogram district and set up South Raujan police station.

Purbachal South police station under Rupganj upazila of Narayganj and Purbachal North police station in Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur will be established for the security of Purbachal New Town project area.

Besides, the government will upgrade Tabalchari police investigation centre in Matiranga upazila of Khagrachari and Galipur police investigation centre in Nawabganj upazila of Dhaka to police stations, according to sources.

The government will also set up one police investigation centre each at Manniarchar area in Islampur upazila of Jamalpur, Jaigir Arpara area of Muksudpur upazila of Gopalganj, Banskandi and Baheratala North unions under Shibchar upazila of Madaripur and Sikdar Mallik union under Sadar upazila of Pirojpur, said sources.

The jurisdiction of Mohammadpur and Dhanmondi police stations in Dhaka and Bhulli and Ruhina police stations in Thakurgaon district will be redefined, said sources.

No proposals for forming Padma, Meghna divisions

Despite speculations about formation of new divisions named “Meghna” in Faridpur region and “Padma” in Cumilla region, the proposals in this regard will not be tabled in the next NICAR meeting.
