Joypurhat: A Joypurhat court on Wednesday sentenced 17 people to life term imprisonment for killing a man over a land dispute in 2009.
Joypurhat Additional Sessions Judge-2 Md Abbas Uddin handed down the judgment.
The court also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each, Nripendra Nath Mondal, public prosecutor at Joy-purhat Judge Court, confirmed.
The lifers are– Hadiuzzaman Pranmanik, Ariful Pramanik, Abu Naser Pramanik, Md Shajahan Ali, Ash-raf Ali, Mohammad Ali alias Lal Mohammad, Mohammad Ali Pramanik, Jahir Pramanik, Shamsul Alam, Syam Uddin Pramanik, Obaidil Pramanik, Saim Pramanik, Rahim Pramanik, Abu Sayed Pramanik, Abu Bakar Pramanik, Banu Begum, and Sahera Begum.
All the convicts, except two, were present at the court.
The court also acquitted five suspects- Amisha Begum, Shahidul Islam, Belchi Begum, Hafeza Fakir and Sabdul Fakir.
According to the prosecution, there had been a long-standing dispute over a piece of land between the victim Saleh Ahmed and the convicts.
On May 2, 2009, the convicts attacked Saleh with local weapons, leaving him dead on the spot.
Following the incident, a case was filed against 22 people with Panchbibi Police following a complaint lodged by younger brother of the victim Azizul Haq.
Investigation officer of the case SI Mominul Haq submitted a charge sheet against her 23 accused on June 24, 2009.
