Chhatra League’s 76th founding anniversary today

Staff Reporter:

The 76th founding anniversary of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the ruling Awami League, will be celebrated across the country through various programs today.
The student organization was born on January 4 in 1948 at the instruction of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman aiming to achieve the freedom of Bangladesh and its people.
The central council of Chhatra League has taken day-long elaborate programs across the country marking its 76th founding anniversary with the theme ‘Smart Bangladesh, Unnoyan Drishyoman, Barbey Kormo Sangsthan’.
To mark the day, national and party flags will be hoisted at the organization’s central office at 6 am and tribute will be paid at the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi in the capital at 7.30 am. The program also includes paying homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreath at his mausoleum in Tungipara at 7.45 am and cutting cake at the Curzon Hall on Dhaka University (DU) campus at 8 am.
A colorful procession will be held at the foot of Oporajeyo Bangla at 10 am while a reunion will be or-ganized on the occasion of the founding anniversary at a ‘convenient’ time in the presence of Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
To mark the anniversary, the Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain and its general secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan have already urged all the unit workers and leaders of the organization to observe the programs in a befitting manner.
Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain said that a colorful procession will be held this year to re-elect Bangabandhu’s worthy daughter Sheikh Hasina as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh in the upcom-ing 12th national election, who has repeatedly threatened her life to implement democracy-human rights-fundamental rights of the Bangalees.
The student wing had played a big role in the 52’s language movement, victory of Jukto front in 54’s provincial council elections, 58’s anti-Aiyub movement, 62’s education movement and six-point demand in 1966.
Then the organization had also played a vital role in releasing Bangabandhu from the imprisonment through staging mass upsurge in 1969, winning absolute majority in the election held in 1970 and bring-ing independence for the country after participating in 71’s Liberation War.
After earning the independence on December 16 in 1971, the Chhatra League leaders and activists joined the reconstruction works of the war-ravaged Bangladesh under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The spirit of the liberation war and the democratic progress also got stuck after the assassination of Fa-ther of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with most of his family members on August 15 in 1975.
Incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had staged movement for re-establishing the liberation war spirit and recovering democracy after returning to the country on May 17 in 1981.
The Chhatra League played an excellent role during the anti-autocrat movement held in 1990 led by Sheikh Hasina.
