Prime Minister Tarique Rahman yesterday inaugurated the second edition of “Notun Kuri Sports”, a talent hunt programme aimed at nurturing the physical and mental development of children and adolescents and building talented athletes from the grassroots.
He inaugurated the programme with the theme “Sports as a profession, assurance for the family” by releasing balloons and pigeons at Khulna District Stadium at 3:45 pm.
The Prime Minister also hoisted the national flag and met young players taking part in the competition’s 10 categories.
Students and athletes in the gallery waved at him as he arrived at the stadium, and the prime minister waved back. The children and adolescents were seen in high spirits at having him close.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque was present at the ceremony.
The programme aims to identify sporting talent among children and adolescents across the country. The government wants to select talented players from the grassroots and create opportunities for their development.
The Department of Sports is implementing the programme under the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in line with a pledge in the BNP’s election manifesto.
The initiative has been taken to hunt sporting talent, following the popular talent hunt programme “Notun Kuri” of the 1980s.
