Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) yesterday conducted a special cleaning and mosquito-control drive simultaneously across all 75 wards as part of a nationwide three-month program to prevent dengue and intensify cleanliness activities under the directives of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The drive was conducted under the supervision of DSCC regional executive officers.
As part of the program, the special cleaning and mosquito-control activities will be carried out across all DSCC wards every Saturday for the next three months.
The program aims to identify and destroy Aedes mosquito breeding grounds, strengthen mos-quito-control activities, accelerate cleaning operations and raise public awareness about dengue prevention.
Yesterday’s drive covered residential areas, roads, alleys, drains, canals, construction sites, park-ing areas, rooftops and abandoned structures across the 75 wards under the city corporation’s 10 regions.
During the inspections, stagnant water was removed from different locations and Aedes larvae were destroyed immediately when detected. Discarded items capable of holding water, including coconut shells, plastic containers, tyres and flowerpots, were also removed.
Larviciding and adulticiding operations were conducted in designated areas, while sanitation workers cleared accumulated garbage and waste from roads, footpaths and surrounding areas.
Awareness rallies were also held in all 75 wards to encourage citizens to take part in dengue pre-vention efforts. City corporation officials and employees, mosquito-control and sanitation workers, and local residents participated in the rallies.
The participants highlighted the importance of keeping homes and surrounding areas clean and preventing stagnant water. Awareness leaflets containing guidelines on dengue prevention were also distributed among residents.
The DSCC Health Department said spraying insecticides alone cannot effectively control dengue and stressed the need to destroy Aedes breeding grounds and ensure active public participation.
The department said field-level monitoring would be strengthened every Saturday alongside regular mosquito-control and cleaning activities.
The DSCC authorities urged city residents to cooperate with the program by keeping their homes, workplaces and surrounding areas clean and ensuring that water does not accumulate anywhere.
