Gopalganj: A 50-year-old man was dead and several people were injured in a clash between two groups over “establishing supremacy” in Kashiani upazila of Gopalganj on Monday.
The deceased Ansar Chowdhury, 50, was a resident of Nizamkandi Union Parishad (UP) under the upazila.
Locals and police said there was a longstanding dispute between ‘Master Group’ and ‘Haji Group’ led by former UP chairman Mokhlesur Rahman Master’s son Mahbubur Rahman and current chairman Haji Nowsher Ali over establishing dominance.
On Sunday, supporters of the Master Group allegedly beat up Haji Groups’ Shafiq. Master Group’s Bip-lob was allegedly stabbed this morning by the rival group centering Sunday’s incident.
At one stage, supporters from both groups got involved in the clash with locally-made sharp weapons, leaving Ansar dead on the spot and several people injured.
Muhammad Firoz, officer-in-charge of Kashiani police station, said on information they rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
The injured were sent to Gopalganj General Hospital and the body was kept at the morgue for autopsy, he said, adding that Ansar Chowdhury was part of Master Group and there were stab marks on his body.
No case has so far been lodged in this connection, the OC added.
