Staff Reporter:
A special session of the Jatiya Sangsad will be convened for the election of Bangladesh’s next president, Chief Whip of the ruling party Nurul Islam Moni has said.
He said the session would be brief but did not specify when it would be called.
The announcement comes a day after the Election Commission (EC) unveiled the schedule for the presidential election. According to the timetable, voting is set for 20 August, although a ballot will not be required if only one valid candidate remains in the race.
Under the schedule, scrutiny of nomination papers will be completed on 16 Aug, when an uncontested candidate, if any, will be declared elected. However, it may become clear who the next president will be as early as 13 Aug, the deadline for submitting nomination papers.
The presidential election was scheduled after Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from office on 24 July.
