Road Transport and Bridges, Shipping and Railways Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam, MP, yesterday un-derscored the need for preserving the historical heritage, distinct identity and glorious role of the Jaitya Press Club (JPC) while undertaking its infrastructural development.
“Development does not simply mean building modern infrastructure . . . preserving an institution’s his-tory, heritage and glorious contributions is equally important,” he told the JPC’s founding anniversary program as the chief guest yesterday morning.
Highlighting the role of journalists, Robiul Alam said, “Journalists are the conscience of the nation and the mirror of society. They identify wrongdoing and play an important role in helping keep the govern-ment, democracy and politics on the right track.”
Regarding the demand to rename a metro rail station after the National Press Club, the minister said he agreed with the proposal in principle.
He, however, said that its implementation would require an assessment of technical feasibility, necessary software modifications and associated costs.
The minister said he would discuss the matter with the managing director of the metro rail authority and take necessary steps following the review.
On the significance of marathon running, he said patience, a clear sense of purpose and sustained effort were the keys to success.
Similar dedication and perseverance were necessary to overcome challenges and achieve defined goals in both personal and national life, he added.
The minister also underscored the need of sports for building a healthy, physically fit and disciplined nation.
He stressed the need to continue practicing sports, promoting cultural activities and nurturing intellectual pursuits.
JPC President and poet Hasan Hafiz, prominent journalists, club members and participants in the sports competition attended the program.
Prizes were distributed among the winners of the competition.
