The government has continued its response to the situation arising from flash floods, landslides and hill collapses in the southeastern and northeastern districts of the country, while regional and district infor-mation offices are carrying out public awareness campaigns on disaster preparedness and safety.
The Regional Information Offices and the district and upazila information offices have continued public awareness activities in response to the natural disasters, according to a PID handout said yesterday.
According to the latest report from the Chattogram Regional Information Office and the District Infor-mation Office, Chattogram metropolitan area and 15 upazilas of the district have been inundated by floods.
The District Information Office has continued emergency dissemination of flood-related messages, road campaigns and public announcements on avoiding unsafe houses damaged by floods or heavy rainfall, maintaining health precautions, preventing snakebites, ensuring the safety of children, women, the elder-ly and persons with disabilities, refraining from making financial transactions while receiving relief, avoiding electric poles and wires to prevent accidents, preventing dengue by eliminating stagnant water, and other public awareness activities.
According to the report, there has been no rainfall in Khagrachari district at present, and no new inci-dents of hill collapse or landslide have occurred. Floodwaters have receded in most areas, although nor-malcy has not yet fully returned. The Khagrachari District Information Office has been broadcasting awareness messages on landslides, floods and post-flood measures since the onset of heavy rainfall.
According to the report, the overall flood situation in Cox’s Bazar district has improved. However, some families in Pekua upazila remain marooned. The district recorded 43 millimetres of rainfall over the last 24 hours, and no new incidents of hill collapse or landslide have occurred. Since the beginning of the heavy rainfall, the District Information Office has continued awareness campaigns and public an-nouncements on landslides, floods, dengue and chikungunya prevention, and post-flood measures.
The report said the situation in Rangamati remains normal. Since the onset of heavy rainfall, the Rang-amati District Information Office has continued road campaigns to raise public awareness and encourage people living in landslide-prone areas to move to safe shelters.
According to the latest information received, the disaster situation in Bandarban is currently normal. The district recorded 30 millimeters of rainfall during the past 24 hours. The water levels of the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers are flowing below the danger level. Floodwaters have receded, and people are return-ing to their homes from shelters. Since the beginning of the heavy rainfall, the District Information Of-fice has continued awareness campaigns and film screenings on landslides, floods and post-flood measures.
According to the latest reports from the Sylhet Regional Information Office and the District Information Offices of Sunamganj and Habiganj, Sylhet district recorded 57 millimeters of rainfall during the 24 hours until 6:00 am yesterday. With increased rainfall, water levels in the Surma, Kushiyara, Sari-Gowain and Piyain rivers have started to rise. Although the Surma River is flowing below the danger level, the Kushiyara River is flowing above the danger level at the Fenchuganj point. There is no threat of newly inundated areas or prolonged flooding, although short-term flooding persists in some low-lying areas adjacent to the rivers.
The overall flood situation in Sunamganj district remains stable. However, with increased rainfall, water levels in the rivers have begun to rise. The Kushiyara River is flowing above the danger level at the Markuli point.
In Habiganj district, floodwaters have receded from inundated areas as rainfall has decreased in Habiganj Sadar, Bahubal and Baniachang upazilas. The district recorded 5.50 millimeters of rainfall over the past 24 hours, and no landslides have occurred. The District Information Office has continued its public awareness campaign.
According to the report, the overall flood situation in Moulvibazar district remains stable. The Manu River is flowing below the danger level. Erosion has been observed on the river protection embankment in Kamalganj upazila. The District Information Office has continued public awareness activities during the flood period and in the post-flood period.
