Woman gets death penalty for murdering husband, dismembering body

Staff Reporter:

A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced a woman to death for murdering her husband and dismembering his body into six pieces in the capital’s Mohakhali area in 2021.

Judge Nazmun Nahar Nipu of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court-16 handed down the verdict, Additional Public Prosecutor Khandaker Shafi Newaz Nasir said.

The convict, Fatema Begum, alias Shilpi, was present in court during the pronouncement of the verdict and was later sent to jail.

According to the prosecution, police recovered the six dismembered body parts of autorickshaw driver Moyna Mia from different locations in Mohakhali on 30 and 31 May 2021.

The victim’s second wife, Nasrin, filed a case with Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station on 1 June that year.

Police arrested Fatema within a day of recovering the body parts. She later gave a confessional statement before the court, admitting that she had killed her husband over family disputes and conflicts arising from his multiple marriages.

Investigators submitted the charge sheet against Fatema on 24 October 2022, and the court framed charges on 12 March 2023. During the trial, the court recorded the testimonies of 17 out of 26 prosecution witnesses before delivering the verdict.
