PM calls for united efforts to harness maritime potential

Staff Reporter:

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman yesterday called for harnessing the country’s maritime potential through coordinated, organized and united efforts by all stakeholders, while giving the highest priority to nation-al interests.
In a message on the eve of the World Hydrography Day 2026, he also said the government is working toward that objective.
Through these efforts, the prime minister said, it will be possible to build a prosperous, self-reliant and strong Bangladesh and the blue economy can become one of the key drivers of the nation’s future pros-perity.
He said in the global reality of the twenty-first century, the ocean is not merely a part of geographical boundaries; rather, it is one of the principal foundations of economic growth, trade connectivity, energy security, environmental balance and national strategic capability.
In this context, Tarique Rahman said, the initiative to celebrate World Hydrography Day 2026 with due importance and professionalism is undoubtedly commendable.
The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) has selected this year’s theme as “Transforming How Ocean Data is Shared,” which is highly timely and relevant, he said.
In yesterday’s world, he said, ensuring the modern, secure, accurate and efficient exchange of ocean-related information is not only a reflection of technological advancement; it is also closely linked to safeguarding national interests, achieving economic independence, strengthening maritime security and enhancing strategic capabilities.
The premier said the rapid and reliable exchange of information makes it possible to ensure safe naviga-tion, prevent accidents, protect the environment and implement the sustainable management of marine resources more effectively.
Bangladesh’s vast maritime area is not merely a geographical expanse; it is one of the key foundations of our economic strength, sovereignty and future prosperity, he said.
He said this maritime zone contains immense natural resources, biodiversity and commercial potential.
The prime minister said the hydrographic activities of the Bangladesh Navy play an indispensable role in ensuring safe navigation routes, preparing accurate seabed charts and supporting the planned develop-ment of coastal regions.
These activities help reduce navigational risks, improve port management and accelerate the growth of the maritime economy, he said.
Tarique Rahman said the present government remains firmly committed to protecting the country’s ma-rine resources, ensuring maritime security, and advancing the blue economy.
“We are determined to maximize the utilization of marine resources while preserving national interests,” he said.
