Police have arrested seven members of an alleged fake currency note syndicate with fake notes worth Tk7.25 lakh in a joint special operation by police from Thakurgaon and Atwari Police Station in Panchagarh.
The arrests were made during raids on Hotel Prime and Hotel Salam in the Chourasta area of Thakurgaon municipality around 11:30pm on Thursday (18 June).
Atwari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Matiur Rahman confirmed the matter.
The arrested individuals were identified as Arif Hossain, 40, of Bakerganj in Barishal; Emra Hossain, 48, of Shibchar in Madaripur; Chandan Mia, 32, of Kishoreganj; Sheikh Mohammad Nasim, 28, of Mirpur in Dhaka; Sohel Khan, 28, of Faridpur; Ruhul Amin, 52, of Keraniganj in Dhaka; and Ismail Hossain, 32, of Debidwar in Cumilla.
Police said they first detained a suspected member of the gang in Atwari based on a tip-off. Later, acting on information provided by him, police conducted raids at two residential hotels in Thakurgaon municipality with assistance from Thakurgaon district police.
During the raids, seven alleged members of the syndicate were arrested and fake currency notes worth Tk7.25 lakh were recovered from their possession.
OC Matiur Rahman said, “The arrested individuals are being interrogated. If anyone else is found involved with the gang, legal action will be taken against them as well.”
