Lobbyists for rapists, drug dealers to be detained

A Correspondent:

Jhenaidah: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md. Asaduzzaman yesterday said that any-one who tries to lobby on behalf of rapists or individuals involved in drug trafficking will be sent behind bars.
“The government has adopted a zero tolerance policy against drugs and rape. If any political leader also makes such interventions, that leader will also be sent to jail under the same case. Even if it is a leader from my own party, they will not be spared,” he said.
The law minister made the remarks while addressing a views-exchange meeting as the chief guest at the Jhenaidah Deputy Commissioner’s office this noon.
Presided over by Jhenaidah Deputy Commissioner Md Noman Hossain, the meeting was also addressed by District Council Administrator MA Majid, valiant Freedom Fighter Kamaluzzaman, civil surgeon Dr Kamruzzaman Sohel, 58 BGB Commander Lt Col Rafikul Alam, Superintendent of Police Miah Mo-hammad Ashis Bin Hasan, Jhenaidah Press Club president Asif Iqbal and district BNP general secretary Zahiduzzaman Mona.
Criticizing the negligence in the workplace by government officials, the law minister said, “The Prime Minister of the country starts office at 9 am, but many government officials at the district and upazila levels still show reluctance to come to office on time. If officials properly discharge their duties from their respective positions, there will be no crisis in society or the state.”
Expressing concern over the drug situation, the minister said, “Drug traders have now become smart; they are using drones for smuggling drugs across the border. To exploit legal loopholes in courts, they carry small quantities like 10-15 pieces, which often lead to judges granting bail easily, considering the amount involved. The government will take further strict measures to curb them.”
