The FY27 budget stands on ‘weak base’: CPD

Staff Reporter:

The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), a prominent non-governmental think-tank, on Friday stated that implementation of the proposed national budget for Fiscal Year 2026-27 (FY27) will be challenging as it has stood on a ‘weak base.’

CPD Distinguished Fellow Mustafizur Rahman made the remarks while speaking in a media briefing session titled CPD’s Analysis of the National Budget FY2026-27 held in a city hotel.

The economist noted that there was a big scope for the government to announce a dissimilar budget this year but it has been likely traditional budget. ““We did not see a big reformation in the budget. However, I think that the government did not include many issues in the proposed budget but it has strategies on overall the country’s development,” he added.

Prof Mustafizur suggested the government for strengthening ‘institutional capacity’ to implement the budget.

He also criticised black money whiting. It is a moral hazard. It will create disparity for regular tax payers.

“We want to see a reflection of BNP’s election manifestos in the budget implementation,” he highlighted.

Speaking there, CPD Executive Director Fahmida Khatun said the government has unveiled the proposed budget amid multiple economic challenges including high inflation and energy crisis.

“This is a large budget, and government expenditure will increase. To implement the budget, the government must focus to increase productivity, ensure confident among investors to attract more domestic and foreign investments,” he added.

“Bringing inflation down to 7.5% will require not only adequate food and energy supplies but also an effective and realistic monetary policy,” she said.

She warned that higher government spending could further fuel inflation if it does not translate into productivity gains, employment generation, and increased investment.

On Thursday, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury presented the Tk9.38 lakh crore budget, which is the largest in the country’s history – in national parliament under the theme “Journey Towards a Democratic, Humane and Inclusive Economy.”
