Staff Reporter:
Police recovered the bodies of a woman and her two grandsons from a rented house in the Sonadanga area of Khulna city on Saturday evening.
The deceased were Baby Begum, 65, and Shamim Bepari, 12, and Mustakim Bepari, 6.
According to police and local sources, the children’s mother, Mary Begum, divorced her first husband, Masum Bepari, four years ago.
Since then, she had been living separately with her two children and mother. She reportedly recently married a man named Rafiqul.
Relatives said Baby Begum and her two grandsons had not been seen since Eid afternoon. They visited the house on Saturday afternoon and became suspicious after noticing a foul smell.
During the search, Baby’s body was found under a bed, Mustakim’s body inside a trunk, and Shamim’s body wrapped in cloth on the bed.
Upon being informed, police arrived at the scene and recovered the bodies.
Sonadanga police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Rafiqul Islam said the children’s mother, Mary Begum, has been taken into police custody.
The bodies bore no visible injury marks, he said, adding that police initially suspected the victims were strangled to death.
The OC said the killings might have been linked to a family dispute, although the actual motive remains under investigation.
The bodies were sent to the morgue of Khulna Medical College Hospital for autopsy, he said.
