Staff Reporter:
A legal notice has been served demanding departmental and criminal action against those responsible for the deaths of six newborns and the illness of several others at the post-operative ward of Ad-din Medical College Hospital in the capital’s Moghbazar area.
The notice also called for compensation for the affected families and immediate safety measures in maternity and neonatal wards at hospitals across the country.
Supreme Court lawyer Ishrat Hasan on Friday (29 May) sent the notice to the secretary of the Health Services Division, the director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the director of hospitals and clinics, and the director of Ad-din hospital.
Meanwhile, DGHS Additional Director General Dr Zahid Raihan said investigators had found serious negligence by the hospital authorities.
He said the inquiry uncovered various irregularities, including infrastructural flaws in the post-operative ward, adding that the report of the government’s high-level investigation committee would be submitted on Saturday.
Earlier, a negligence case was filed with Ramna Police Station over the deaths. A relative of one of the deceased newborns lodged the case against the hospital authorities on Wednesday night.
