Ramisa’s killer to get highest punishment in one month: PM

A Correspondent:

Mymensingh: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman yesterday announced that the maximum punishment for Ramisa’s killer will be ensured within the next one month.
The Prime Minister made the announcement while inaugurating a three-day national program marking the 127th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam in Trishal yesterday afternoon.
He said, “The greatest damage that has taken place, especially during the time of the ousted fascist re-gime, is that humanity, compassion, and the country’s long-standing religious and social values have been completely destroyed. The death (killing) of an innocent girl (Ramisa) at Mirpur in Dhaka has proved the complete moral degradation of human values.”
“On this issue, I want to clearly present before you yesterday that the current government will in no way tolerate this kind of child abuse or violence against women. And the current government will, InShaAl-lah, ensure the maximum punishment for Ramisa’s killer within the next one month. That maximum punishment is the death penalty,” the premier added.
He said the maximum punishment will be given so that in the future no person dares to commit such abuse against children or women.
Emphasizing on building a safe and humane state, Tarique Rahman said, “to establish a safe and humane state and society, we must establish the rule of law. We must bring changes in political culture.”
“Simultaneously, we must revive the country’s long-standing religious, social and cultural values in our national life. In this regard, the life and works of Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam are relevant,” he added.
Following Ramisa’s murder, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited Ramisa’s family residence at Palla-bi in Dhaka on Thursday night and met her grieving father and elder sister, assuring them of speedy trial in the murder case.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, who accompanied the Prime Minister here, later told journalists, “The charge sheet in the Ramisa murder case will be submitted to the court by Sunday afternoon.”
The three-day program marking the birth anniversary of the National Poet has been kicked off this after-noon at the Nazrul Mancha of the Nazrul Academy ground at Darirampur in Trishal here, which is asso-ciated with the poet’s childhood memories. The Ministry of Cultural Affairs is organizing the event.
Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury presided over the inaugural function while State Minis-ter for Cultural Affairs Ali Newaz Mahmood Khyom, State Minister for Jute and Textiles Md Shariful Alam, local lawmaker Mahbubur Rahman Liton, Secretary of Cultural Affairs Ministry Kaniz Moula, Mymensingh Zila Parishad Administrator Syed Emran Saleh Prince, Executive Director of the Kabi Nazrul Institute Md Latiful Islam Shibli, the poet’s granddaughter and Chairperson of the Trustee Board of the Kabi Nazrul Institute Khilkhil Kazi, Professor Tarikh Monjur of Dhaka University’s Bangla De-partment and Mymensingh Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md.
