Barishal University former treasurer returns as VC
On Thursday, the Education Ministry appointed Professor Mamun-Ur-Rashid of Patuakhali Science and Technology University as the new vice chancellor of Barishal University.
Until May last year, he was the treasurer at the Barishal University. But he was removed from the post over disagreements with then Vice Chancellor Suchita Sharmin. On 13 May 2025, the Education Ministry relieved both from their posts.
Later, Rajshahi University Professor Mohammad Towfiq Alam was appointed as the vice chancellor of Barishal University. However, since Monday, a section of the university’s teachers launched a “complete shutdown” movement, padlocking all the administrative building, on allegations that Towfiq unjustly held up promotions.
On Thursday, he brought in masons and broke down all the locks.
Amid the tensions, the ministry has withdrawn him and appointed former treasurer Mamun-ur-Rashid as the new vice chancellor.
The protesting teachers have said their movement will continue to press home their demands.
