Indian Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday announced Suvendu Adhikari as West Bengal’s chief minister, days after BJP registered a historic victory in the state in assembly elections, reports India Today.
Adhikari, who was elected as the BJP legislature party leader, will take oath as Chief Minister at 11am on Saturday (9 May) at Kolkata’s iconic Brigade Parade Ground.
The announcement marks a major political milestone for the BJP, which is set to form its first-ever government in West Bengal after ending the Trinamool Congress’ 15-year rule in the state.
Adhikari played a key role in the BJP’s West Bengal campaign and gained national attention after defeating former chief minister Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur constituency during the assembly elections.
The swearing-in ceremony is expected to witness the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and several BJP and NDA leaders.
