Cultural Affairs Minister Advocate Nitai Roy Chowdhury stated that the government has launched initiatives to preserve the historic Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra (SBBK) at Kalurghat and honour the legacy of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.
The minister said plans are under consideration to bring the radio station and Zia Memorial Museum under unified management.
He made the remarks during his visit to the historic Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra on Tuesday afternoon.
Stressing the need to preserve Liberation War history, the minister said efforts will be strengthened to highlight its heroic stories for future generations. The 1971 Liberation War was a pivotal people’s struggle that led to Bangladesh’s independence.
He noted that the 1948 language movement, the 1952 language martyrs, the 1969 mass uprising, and the 1970 election paved the way for independence.
“After the brutal attack by Pakistani forces on 25 March 1971, President Ziaur Rahman’s independence proclamation from Kalurghat Betar Kendra gave new purpose and unity to the liberation war effort,” said the minister.
The declaration rekindled the people’s spirit and inspired courage in the face of adversity, he added.
The minister also announced plans to build a modern memorial museum, install a sculpture of Shaheed Zia, and preserve historical broadcasting equipment to honour this pivotal moment in history.
