BNP serves show cause notice to its member over Deepto TV staff killing

Staff Reporter:

BNP on Friday served a show cause notice on its party member Rabiul Alam Robi for alleged involvement in the killing of Deepto TV staffer Tanjil Jahan Islam Tamim.

Rabiul is the managing director of Pleasant Properties, which was allegedly reluctant to hand over certain apartments to their rightful owner – Tanjil’s family.

Continued differences over the property rights led to an encounter at the building in the capital’s Mahanagar Project area on Thursday, and a violent attack by Rabiul’s team left Tanjil dead.

BNP’s notice, signed by Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, orders Rabiul to explain in writing within 24 hours why organisational disciplinary measures would not be taken against him for his alleged involvement in the crime.

Numerous media reports on his alleged complicity in the violent killing incident constitutes a breach of party discipline and tarnishes the party’s image, the notice said terming his response to the allegations demand urgency.

As per allegations, after erecting a residential building, Rabiul’s Pleasant Properties had handed over 4.5 flats each to two co-owners of the plot, in keeping with agreement, but kept delaying the handover to the third co-owner – Tanjil’s father Sultan Mahmud.

All the three co-owners had equal shares in the land.

Amid tensions between Tanjil’s family and Pleasant Properties, a team from the company went to the building on Thursday to oversee construction works at an apartment.

Rabiul was also part of the team.

Upon learning their presence, Tanjil and his father Sultan went to the apartment and intervened to stop the construction works there. A violent encounter ensued leading to Tanjil’s death.
