The Department of Environment (DoE) has formed a committee to assess the environmental damage caused by the fire at S Alam Refined Sugar Industries Ltd in Chattogram.
After inspecting the affected area on the ground, the committee will recommend necessary measures required taking for the mitigation of the damage to the environment and biodiversity, said a media statement issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change.
Hillol Biswas, director of environment department, Chattogram region, has been made convenor of the probe committee.
Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, professor of the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences at the Chittagong University, and Dr Asiful Haque, professor of the Department of Civil Engineering and director of Institute of River, Harbor and Environmental Sciences at the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology will act as the expert member of the committee.
Ferdous Anwar, deputy director of Directorate of Environment, Chittagong District Office, will act as the member secretary of the committee, while Md Kamrul Hasan, deputy director of Department of Environment, Chittagong Laboratory, is a member of the committee.
The committee can co-opt any other member if necessary. The probe body has been asked to submit the investigation report with clear opinion to the director general of the directorate of environment in the next seven working days.
