A total of 12 mayoral candidates, including ruling party candidate Azmat Ullah Khan, on Thursday filed their nomination papers for the Gazipur City Corporation election, scheduled for May 25.

Independent candidate Mokhlesur Rahman did not submit his nomination paper on Thursday, which was the deadline for submitting the paper.

A total of 290 aspirants for the councillor posts also submitted their nomination papers while 82 submitted the documents for reserved seats.

Former mayor (dismissed) Mohammad Jahangir Alam told reporters that he could be arrested or murdered for contesting the polls. He further said that he has followed all necessary rules for submitting nomination papers.

Sarkar Shah Noor Islam Roni, the son of jailed BNP leader Nurul Islam Sarkar, also submitted his nomination papers as an independent candidate. Nurul Islam is one of those sentenced to death over the murder of Awami League leader Ahsan Ullah Master.

AL mayoral candidate Azmat Ullah, who submitted his nomination paper yesterday, allegedly violated protocols by bringing more than five people with him. At least 10 leaders and activists accompanied him to the office of the returning officer.

The Election Commission had directed candidates not to bring five people along with them while submitting nomination papers.

The EC will scrutinize the nomination papers on April 30 while the candidates will be allowed to withdraw their candidatures till May 8.

Polls symbols will be distributed among the candidates on May 9. The elections will be held using electronic voting machines (EVMs) on May 25.
