Woman killed, 4 hurt as truck hits rickshaw

A Correspondent:

Chandpur: A woman was killed and four others were injured when a truck collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Chandpur on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Mahinur Begum, 38, wife of Nasir Tapadar of Tarpurchandi village under Tarpurchandi Union in Sadar upazila.
Eyewitnesses said the auto-rickshaw was travelling from Bakila in Hajiganj towards Chandpur. As its driver tried to overtake another auto-rickshaw, it collided head-on with a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction around 2:30pm in the Debpur area of the Chandpur-Cumilla regional highway.
As a result, the auto-rickshaw overturned into a roadside ditch, leaving Mahinur dead on the spot.
Her younger brother Md Yunus, 28, was among those injured. The identities of the other injured could not immediately be ascertained.
Fayez Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station, said police seized both the truck and the auto-rickshaw following the accident.
He said local residents caught the truck driver and his helper and handed them over to police. However, the auto-rickshaw driver left the scene.
The body was sent to the Chandpur Sadar Hospital morgue, the OC said.
They are investigating the incident and legal action will be taken, he added.
