Staff Reporter:
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday rejected a proposal from the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment to rename a technical training centre in the capital’s Keraniganj.
The proposal sought to change the name of the Keraniganj Technical Training Centre, located in Hazaratpur and established in 2006, under the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET). It currently operates as a technical education and skills development institution.
Sources from the Prime Minister’s Office said the proposal had suggested naming the institution after former prime minister Khaleda Zia. However, Tarique Rahman did not approve the request.
Officials further said the Prime Minister instead directed that if a new naming initiative is to be undertaken, a new institution should be established for that purpose. According to those familiar with the matter, the instruction was seen as a notable stance against politically driven renaming of existing institutions.
A senior official at the Prime Minister’s Office said the directive was clearly noted in the official file, stating that any naming after individuals should be linked to newly created institutions rather than renaming existing ones.
Earlier on Monday, the Prime Minister declined approval for a foreign visit proposal involving five officials, including Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain, intended to observe mosquito control initiatives in the United States.
