Expelled BNP leader Ishaq Sarker, along with several others, on Friday formally joined the National Citizens Party (NCP).
Others include Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq’s granddaughter Fersamin Haque Iqbal, social activist Mohiuddin Roni—who earlier came into the spotlight for protesting railway irregularities during the Awami League government—and content creator Nuruzzaman Kafi.
NCP held a formal joining ceremony at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) in the capital, where NCP Convener and Parliament’s Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam announced the names of their new party members.
Fersamin Haq Iqbal could not attend the ceremony, as she is currently abroad.
Welcoming the new members, Nahid said, “We will work in unity.”
He said Ishaq Sarker was the main attraction of the event, noting that Ishaq had previously held posts in Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal and had faced multiple cases during anti-fascist movements.
Nahid added, “Many of Ishaq Sarker’s followers are also joining the NCP. We welcome them as well.”
Later at the event, Shangskritik Mukti Jot leader Maksudur Rahman Sohel joined NCP as well. And then the party’s new members made some remarks.
Earlier, on 19 April, 44 leaders from the AB Party, UP Bangladesh—formed by former Chhatra Shibir leaders—and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement joined the NCP.
