Bipartisan committee to be formed to discuss fuel crisis

Staff Reporter:

The parliament is set to form a committee with equal number of members from both the ruling and opposition alliances to hold discussions on resolving the current energy crisis.

The government would take action after reviewing the recommendations made by the new committee.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman accepted the proposal made in the regard the previous day by the opposition leader, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman.

“Yesterday, the opposition leader proposed that a bipartisan group of lawmakers can work together on resolving the fuel crisis. In this regard, I wish to say that BNP stands ready to hold dialogue with anyone in the interest of the country and the people,” the premier said at the parliament.

Tarique also agreed with Shafiqur Rahman’s observation that the country’s ongoing fuel crisis, is originally an international one. Bangladesh did not start the crisis but is suffering from it.

Tarique proposed the names of five ruling party lawmakers for the new 10-member committee, where Energy Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud would hold the chair. The remaining four members are: State Minister Aninda Islam Amit, Lakshmipur-4 lawmaker ABM Ashrafuddin Mizan, Manikganj-2 lawmaker Mainul Islam Khan Shanto and Shariatpur-3 lawmaker Mia Nuruddin Apu.

Tarique then asked the opposition alliance to propose their five lawmakers in the new committee.

Shafiqur Rahman welcomed Tarique’s call for names, and expressed gratitude to the prime minister for accepting his proposal.

The opposition would soon propose five lawmakers for the group, Shafiqur added.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed reminded that the current parliament session will conclude towards the end of the month, asking the opposition leader to present names at the earliest.

“If the ruling and opposition parties move forward through similar kind of cooperation, they can solve any national issue,” the speaker noted.
