The Central Shaheed Minar is getting final touches as the nation prepares to observe International Mother Language Day with due respect and solemnity, commemorating the sacrifices of the language martyrs.
The historic monument, situated near the University of Dhaka, has become a hub of artistic and preparatory activity. Students and workers are working tirelessly to clean the premises, repaint the structure, and complete traditional alpana designs symbolizing cultural pride and remembrance. Fresh coats of white paint have been applied to the monument and its altar to restore its dignified appearance.
Students from the Faculty of Fine Arts are leading the artistic efforts, drawing intricate alpana patterns across the monument grounds and adjacent roads. Over 500 students have been involved in the preparations, reflecting a strong sense of dedication to honoring the historic occasion.
“We have completed the initial outlining and are now focusing on coloring. Everyone is working together to ensure the preparations are completed on time,” said Meherrunnesa Iti, a student participating in the efforts.
Authorities said symbolic installations, including the iconic red sun behind the monument, will be placed once the painting work is finalized. Additionally, surrounding walls are being adorned with Bengali alphabets and graffiti depicting the history and significance of the Language Movement.
People from all walks of life are expected to begin arriving at the monument from late tonight with flowers in hand to pay tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives to protect the Bangla language. The day, observed annually on 21 February, holds profound national significance for the people of Bangladesh and is internationally recognized by UNESCO as International Mother Language Day.
Security has been tightened in and around the monument, with CCTV cameras installed and temporary control rooms set up by law enforcement agencies to ensure a safe and orderly observance.
The Central Shaheed Minar remains a powerful symbol of sacrifice, linguistic identity, and the enduring commitment to preserving cultural heritage and language rights.
