The Christian community in Bangladesh and around the world would celebrate Christmas today marking the birth of Jesus Christ.
The day would be observed with special prayers, carol singing, church illumination, the setting up of makeshift Christmas trees at homes, churches and missions, exchanging gifts, visiting relatives and friends, family gatherings and festive meals.
Children eagerly await Santa Claus and his gifts, traditionally believed to arrive on Christmas Eve night and opened early this morning.
In the capital, Ramna St Mary’s Cathedral in Kakrail, Holy Rosary Church in Tejgaon and St Christina Church in Mohammadpur completed all preparations to celebrate the occasion.
Churches have been decorated inside and outside with colourful balloons, paper designs, lace and flowers. Artificial Christmas trees adorned with colourful lights have also been set up in church premises.
The Day is a public holiday.
Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, in a message, greeted members of the Christian community and wished peace, welfare and prosperity for all citizens, including Christians.
Prof Yunus said Jesus Christ came into the world with the message of peace, justice and the liberation of humanity.
“The great Jesus was always devoted to serving the distressed, the neglected and the starving. Throughout His life, He preached the glory of forgiveness, love and devotion to God. His way of life and noble moral virtues remain exemplary ideals for His devotees and followers even today.”
Mentioning Bangladesh as a shining example of communal harmony, Prof Yunus said, “Since time immemorial, the people of this country have maintained cordial coexistence by respecting different religions, cultures and customs.”
The government has taken special security measures in the capital for the smooth celebration of Christmas Day.
Bangladesh Betar and private radio stations and Bangladesh Television and private TV channels will also air special programmes marking the day.
