Over 70,000 expats register to vote through postal ballot system

Staff Reporter:

A total of 70,660 Bangladeshis living abroad have so far registered to vote through a postal ballot system for the first time ahead of the 13th national election and the upcoming referendum.

According to the latest update on the Election Commission (EC) website, a total of 70,660 expatriates had completed registration through the ‘Postal Vote BD’ app as of 11:30 am today (28 November). Of them, 59,510 are men and 11,150 are women.

Country-wise registration shows 14,236 voters in the United States followed by 9,075 in South Korea, 7,087 in Canada, 6,452 in Japan, 6,027 in Australia and 4,480 in South Africa.

Meanwhile, although voter registration remained temporarily suspended in Saudi Arabia and six other countries due to incorrect or incomplete address information in the newly launched “Postal Vote BD” app, the Election Commission (EC) is expecting to resume the service today, Friday.

Director (Public Relations) and Information Officer at the EC Secretariat Md Ruhul Amin Mallik today said that efforts were underway to restart the registration service in the seven countries by the end of the day.
