Extradition process to begin with convict Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal: Press Secretary

Staff Reporter:

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has said India is examining Bangladesh’s request to extradite Sheikh Hasina after her conviction in the July massacre case, adding that the process is expected to begin with the extradition of former home minister and fellow convict Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

In a post on his verified Facebook account on Friday (28 November), Shafiqul Alam wrote that Hasina, Kamal and other Awami League leaders accused over the July massacre will be extradited very soon to Bangladesh to face justice.

India is already assessing Dhaka’s request regarding Hasina, he noted.

He claimed that despite Hasina’s strong network of sympathisers, Kamal—whom he referred to by his controversial name “the Butcher of Dhaka” — is likely to be extradited soon.

According to him, emerging information about alleged abuses during Hasina’s nearly 16-year tenure is drawing increased global media scrutiny, particularly regarding Kamal’s alleged role in the July killings and enforced disappearances.

Shafiqul Alam added that no amount of spending by Kamal or other Awami League leaders would allow them to escape accountability indefinitely.

If the nation stays focused on justice for the victims of July and other human rights violations, he said, it will become increasingly difficult for those responsible to avoid consequences.

“It will begin with Kamal — and then, one by one,” he wrote.
