Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has emphasised the need for the judiciary to remain steadfast in its principles as Bangladesh walks toward a new political future.
“Our task is therefore delicate: to safeguard the integrity of the current constitution, and at the same time, to prepare ourselves mentally, institutionally and politically for what the people may choose to rebuild in the future,” he said.
The chief justice was addressing an international conference titled “Bay of Bengal Conversation” organised by the Centre for Governance Studies in Dhaka.
“If we fail, no reform – no matter how highly praised – will withstand the decay caused by weak governance or geopolitical turbulence,” he said.
“But, if we can remain steadfast in constitutional morality and the discipline of the rule of law, this transitional moment will be remembered not as a chapter of uncertainty, but as the beginning of our constitutional renaissance,” the chief justice added.
