Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasiruddin said on Saturday that the Election Commission will begin its work on the proposed referendum as soon as the relevant law is passed.
“The referendum law is expected to be passed next week, after which the commission will begin preparations and make decisions in line with the legislation,” he said.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of a workshop organised by the Asian Network for Free Elections at a Dhaka hotel in the afternoon, the CEC said a correct voter list is crucial for fair elections.
He further said that holding both the national election and a referendum on the same day will be a major challenge for the commission.
Earlier, the CEC had said the commission would take further decisions upon receiving a formal directive from the government.
The government has already issued a letter regarding the instruction.
